“I love Jared Klang from Covenant Builders! His team is prompt respectful and easy to work with.
I had an issue during the last batch of snow storms in January of 2026 where we ordered a delivery from Walmart and they placed the delivery in-between our front door and screen door. We'll that night a massive windstorm cranked our screen door and torqued the door frame so my entryway door and screen door no longer opened and closed correctly. This is a huge problem especially since I have a handicapped child living there and he needs to open the door safely. We ended up filing a claim with our home owners policy to get it fixed and selected Jared Klang from Covenant Builders to replace the door.
They did an amazing job by following the recommendations of the insurance company to align the cost to the estimate but allowed me to select the door from several models they had available and willing to work around my schedule to get it installed. What roofing materials hold up to Duluth's snow and freeze-thaw cycles?
Architectural asphalt shingles rated for wind and impact resistance are the practical choice for most homes in this region. What matters as much as the shingle is the system underneath it: ice and water shield along the eaves and valleys, a full underlayment, and balanced ventilation. A premium shingle over a poorly ventilated deck will still fail early.
What causes ice dams, and can a new roof stop them?
Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, the meltwater runs down to the cold eave and refreezes there. The ridge of ice then backs water up under the shingles. A new roof alone does not fix it. The fix is balanced intake and exhaust ventilation plus adequate attic insulation, with ice and water shield as the backup layer.
How does proper gutter installation protect my foundation?
Gutters carry rainwater and snowmelt away from the base of the house. Without them, or with undersized or poorly sloped ones, that water lands against the foundation, erodes the soil and finds its way into the basement. In this region gutters also have to survive a season of ice load, which means hanger spacing and mounting matter as much as the gutter itself.
When should I replace my siding in northern Minnesota?
Consider replacement when you see cracking, warping, buckling or paint that will not hold, or when you find soft spots in the sheathing behind it. Rising heating costs can also point to siding that has lost its air and water barrier. Older homes across Duluth and Superior often benefit from modern engineered wood or fiber cement, which handle freeze-thaw cycling far better than original wood siding.
Can new windows actually reduce heating costs here?
Yes, though most of the saving comes from stopping air leakage rather than from the glass itself. Old windows leak at the sash, the frame and the gap between the frame and the framing. A new insulated unit, properly flashed and sealed into a sound rough opening, removes those paths. Aging wood frames common in older Duluth homes are usually the biggest offender.
What is the difference between a standard and an insulated entry door?
An insulated entry door has a foam-filled core and a thermal break, so it resists conductive heat loss in a way a hollow or solid-slab door cannot. It also tends to seal and sound-deaden better. Either way the installation decides the outcome: the unit has to sit plumb and square on a flashed sill pan with a continuously sealed perimeter.
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
Most full kitchen remodels run several weeks, and the pacing item is usually cabinet lead time rather than the work on site. Sequencing demolition, any layout or mechanical changes, cabinetry, countertops and finish work keeps the room out of service for the shortest window the schedule allows.
How is moisture handled during a bathroom remodel?
Behind the finishes. Wet walls get a proper waterproofing layer before tile, supply and drain lines are updated where they are reachable, and the exhaust fan is vented to the exterior rather than into the attic. Venting a bathroom fan into an attic is one of the most common causes of roof deck rot in this climate.
What are the benefits of a deck on a sloped lot?
An elevated deck turns a slope that was unusable into living space without the cost of regrading. On wooded lots around Esko and Cloquet that often means capturing a view as well. The engineering matters: footings have to reach below the frost line, generally 60 inches or more here, or the frame will heave every spring.
What is the biggest mistake homeowners make with roof ventilation?
Adding exhaust without adding intake. Ridge vents alone, with blocked or missing soffit vents, cannot move air. The attic still traps heat and moisture, the roof deck stays damp and the shingles age from underneath. Ventilation has to be balanced between intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge to work at all.
Can a home addition be made to match the existing house?
Yes, and it should be hard to tell where the original structure ends. That means matching roof pitch, siding profile, trim details and window proportions, and detailing the junction between old and new so both roof and wall assemblies stay watertight where they meet. That junction is where poorly planned additions leak.
When is drywall repair needed after a remodel?
Almost always. Moving fixtures, running new wiring or plumbing, and simple construction traffic leave holes and dings. The repair is only as good as the blend at its edges, so compound is feathered well past the patch, the surrounding texture is matched, and the patch is primed before paint so it does not flash under raking light.
